Insulation experts in creating a high-performance envelope in your attic.
You may have noticed that rooms in your home are never really comfortable while your furnace or air conditioner seems to run continually. Now is the best time to have Ethical Exteriors evaluate your home because energy costs will continue to increase. In most homes, the problem starts in the attic.
Key indicators you have problems in your attic’s envelope.
Inconsistent Temperature
Your interior room temperature keeps fluctuating, and some rooms are inexplicably hotter or colder than others. It may be that your attic insulation and airflow may not be working correctly across the entire attic. You may need additional insulation or new ventilation.
Cold Drafts
Feeling a cool draft in a section of the home could be caused by ceiling lights not being sealed from direct venting conditioned air into the attic. Sealing the Can-Lights will remove these cold drafts and significantly reduce your home’s energy cost. You could also check areas like your wall outlets and switches for this same cold air movement or a cold cover plate.
Ice Damming
The ice builds up at the eave edges from snowmelt and then icing. Snowmelt and icing are common indicators that you do not have the right amount of insulation and ventilation. Warm air in the attic rises and warms the roof deck and melts the snow. This water moves down the roof to the overhang area called the soffit. This area is at a lower temperature and will cause the water to freeze. The result is Ice Damming and Icicles. We will inspect for proper airflow in the attic, so that roof decking stays cold and the correct amount of insulation is applied. Every soffit vent on your home must be inspected to ensure that they are not over-painted, covered, or blocked from airflow. You may need additional soffit vents.
Condensation and Water Infiltration
Improper insulation can cause condensation or water build-up in the attic’s insulation, causing water damage to the ceiling and walls. Homeowners that desire a warmer interior with a higher humidity setting can be at a higher risk of causing this effect in the attic.
Mold in the Attic
Moisture in your home that moves into the attic space can turn to mold with improper ventilation. An attic with excessive moisture build-up can damage the insulation, decking, and ceilings. If the issue is not addressed, you may need to remove all the degraded moldy insulation, chemically treat the decking and trusses, or replace specific attic sections. Wet insulation, decking, trusses, and other wood materials will draw pests and animals to nest in an attic space.
What are the typical percentages for heat loss around the home!
Ceiling & Attic: 25% – 35%
Air Leakage: 15% – 25%
Windows: 10% – 20%
Walls: 15% – 25%
Floors: 10% – 20%
This home is out of control with the Ice Damming. Call us before the issues get this far! This will accelerate the deterioration of your roof, and water can start to infiltrate your home over time. If it backs into the house, water can pool on the backside of the ceiling, causing it to sag, popped nails, yellow water spots, and detached drywall.
At a minimum, have us service your home to remove snow & ice that we can clear away without damaging the shingles, and then we will finish up with calcium chloride to melt the rest of the ice and snow away. If necessary, we can attach a heated wire to control the icing, but it should not be used as a permanent repair solution.

If your attic looks like something black is gathering on the insulation or the roof deck (plywood or deck boards), this is likely a mold. Depending on the extent of the problem, it could affect your family’s health.
We will check your attic for this condition and respond with a quote to provide a cleanup solution. If conditions are severe, we may need to remove all the insulation and replace it.
While inspecting the attic, we will look for the nesting or infiltration of bugs, rodents, and pests. We will also offer solutions in this area with screens, repellents, and fixing any holes caused by animals. This can be part of any roof replacement. The bottom line is Ethical Exteriors will help you to create a safe and healthy living space.

Not having enough insulation will cause high energy loss, but having too much insulation without the proper ventilation can cause a condition where moisture can build up and start the mold process. We will make sure it is just right.
